Overview

WebShell is a browser-only Alpine Linux shell that boots directly into BusyBox ash through CheerpX. It has no desktop, app UI, multiplexer, or preinstalled package set, so you start with a small shell and add what you need after networking is ready.

Direct BusyBox shell

Start directly in Alpine Linux's /bin/sh with a minimal x86 minirootfs and no extra desktop layer.

Persistent local overlay

Changes made in the shell persist in the browser's IndexedDB overlay instead of modifying the immutable base image.

Tailscale networking

Authenticate in the browser and use an available Tailnet Exit Node when the shell needs public internet access.

Fullscreen PWA terminal

Use a responsive xterm.js terminal with WebGL rendering when available and automatic fallback when it is not.

Use and install

Open WebShell in a supported browser. HTTPS deployments can be installed as a standalone PWA from the browser menu.

FAQ

What does WebShell provide?

It provides a minimal Alpine Linux x86 shell in the browser through CheerpX, with BusyBox ash as the starting shell.

Can I install packages?

Yes. After networking is ready, you can run commands such as apk update and apk add git curl in the browser shell.

Is my work persistent?

Changes are written to the browser's IndexedDB overlay and persist locally while that browser storage remains available.

Does WebShell include a server backend?

No. The app has no server-side runtime or Vercel Functions. The shell runs client-side in the browser.
